Overview of Major Investments and Their Impact on Progress in Combating Biological Threats

Funding is crucial for biothreat-related research and development (R&D). Here is an overview of some of the largest investments in this area and their impact on advancing the fight against biological threats.

Accelerating Vaccine Development, Production and Availability Project (ACT-Accelerator)

This is a global supply chain initiative created to accelerate the development and distribution of vaccines, tests and therapies for COVID-19. To date, billions of dollars have been raised to fund this initiative, which has contributed to the development and distribution of vaccines for COVID-19 on an unprecedented scale.

   GAVI, Alliance for Immunization

GAVI is a global public-private partnership that has raised and invested billions of dollars in vaccination programs in low- and middle-income countries since 2000. These investments have contributed to a significant reduction in the burden of infectious diseases around the world.

   Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest private funders of biohazard research. The foundation has invested billions of dollars in research on malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases, contributing to many important breakthroughs.

   National Institutes of Health (NIH)

NIH, a U.S. government agency, is one of the largest funders of biomedical research in the world. In recent years, NIH has invested billions of dollars in biohazard research, contributing to advances in areas ranging from the development of new vaccines to understanding mechanisms of pathogenesis.

In short, these investments are having a tremendous impact on our ability to combat biological threats. Thanks to the generosity of donors and the innovation of scientists, these funds have helped accelerate the development and distribution of effective tools to combat many biological threats.
